I had never even heard of this 2009 film (directed by Jingle Ma) until a few days before Mulan (2020)’s release, because frankly it just hadn’t occurred to me to look for other adaptations of my favorite Disney classic. I watched Mulan: Rise of the Warrior (2009) so I could just enjoy the fucking story without all of the above getting in the way. Regardless of the actual content of the film, it will be hard for Mulan (2020) to go down in history as anything other than just another goddamn thing the world argued about this year. There is no room left for it to just be a movie. From the controversial nature of a mega company like Disney itself, to the political views of the lead actress, the insufficient number of Asian creators involved in development, and ultimately it’s pricey release on Disney+ have all drowned the film in negativity. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Disney’s new live-action adaptation of The Ballad of Mulan.
